You may or may not know me. I’ve worked in TV, theatre and new media in Australia, and film in the US. In a complicated and evolving entertainment landscape, I challenge the status quo for what it means to be a leading man. I’m not a viral superstar or a superhero (yet), and I don’t do stand-up (at least not for paying audiences).
I’ve experienced enough pain to bring vulnerability to "dickhead" characters very successfully, and am passionate about igniting empathy in a role requiring "depth." I’m an extroverted introvert – very much at home thinking alone in the corner, but often obligated to putting on a show. Maybe I’m the hero or the boyfriend. If neither of those, I’m definitely the ambitious guy who’s in search of a greater purpose and loves other people more than I’m willing to admit.
After working on features and shorts in Sydney, I appeared in a lead role across two seasons of MAKO MERMAIDS, a Netflix Original. In between and after seasons of MAKO, I performed on stage at the New Theatre, King Street Theatre, Zenith Theatre and Parade Playhouse. I worked with director Rowan Woods (LITTLE FISH) and Richard Roxburgh (MOULIN ROUGE) on the award-winning ABC series RAKE, and showed up in a major role on the successful online series THE GAUNTLET for Amazon and SparkkTV. SHOW OFFS and NO EVIL, films in which I starred in leading characters, were selected for the Cannés Court Metrage and the Palm Springs International Short Fest, among many others.
I don’t want to be a lawyer, but I studied a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws at the University of Sydney. Before succumbing to the temptations of feeling things to tell stories bigger than myself, I explored employment at different law firms and media companies.
I recently wrapped a lead role on YouTube pilot NIA, and another on the US feature JUST WITHIN REACH, starring Estella Warren (PLANET OF THE APES) and Thomas Duffy (JURASSIC PARK: THE LOST WORLD). I trained part-time for 3 years at the Hub Studio in Sydney, under such highly regarded teachers and directors like Kevin Jackson, Les Chantery, Roel Voorbij and Anthony Skuse. I’ve also studied with Alex O’Loughlin (HAWAII 5-0), Malcolm Sinclair (CASINO ROYALE), Nicholas Hope (BAD BOY BUBBY), Greg Apps (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II) and Kim Farrant (director, STRANGERLAND), among many others. I’ve spent considerable time also working with Eric and Susana Morris in Los Angeles, as well as Craig Wallace.
I’m currently hosting a weekly podcast for iTunes, #HonestConversations with Alex Cubis, and am developing two projects: a mockumentary web series and a politically charged limited series. I was recently a judge for the LADFF (Los Angeles Diversity Film Festival). I’d love to help us all tell intelligent stories that make us think critically about emotional and social truths. Stay in touch, reach out and join me on the journey. Or offer your email below and I'll share some insights.
